"The roles of Aspern"

"The roles of Aspern" Can you get some old love letters guarded jealously as if it were a treasure? That is the mission that is imposed by Morton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a literary critic too keen to get hold of the mail kept between a great poet Jeffrey Aspern (Jon Kortajarena), who died young, and his girlfriend. This performance directed by Julien Landais, produced on a novel by Henry James, begins in 1822 as a flashback of the "present" narrated some 60 years later. Located in Venice, history goes back and forth in time. The passages of the past appear from time to time to justify and explain very slowly what happened in the couple and why cryptically keep the secret. When Morton, an elegant and sophisticated man, arrives unexpectedly at an old and neglected mansion far from the city, inhabited by two women and a maid, with the purpose of settling down for a few months to fix the garden, the calm will be completely altered. Its owner is Juliana (Vanessa Redrave), the protagonist of the truncated love story with the deceased poet. She keeps the correspondence in a place that not even her niece Tina (Joely Richardson), mother and daughter in real life, knows where she hides them. The protagonist, obsessed with finding them, will be applying several strategies to get them. Change of identity, kindness, pressure, seduction, etc. Within that game, close to the cat and the mouse, the film takes place. The composition of each situation is very theatrical. The vocabulary used is well from that era, refined, cultured and literary. In spite of that, the arrangement of the scenes is dynamic, adapting necessarily to the cinematographic rhythm. The setting, the costumes, the locations and the photography are impeccable, typical of a large production. There is not a lot of background music, yes voice-overs that coexist with the visual. The characters have a well-defined personality, which allows a fluid interaction between them. Because the important thing here are the dialogues and the actions. On the one hand, the continuous psychological persuasion on the part of Morton, and on the other the firm resistance of women. In this power struggle who loses patience will be defeated and will pay a high cost for that. Title: "The papers of Aspertn".
