"A stylish thief"

"A stylish thief" The chronicles and catalogs of the world will mark that on September 28, the last film with Robert Redford working as an actor was released in the USA, his country of origin, according to his own advertisement. For the public, for the huge mass of people who have been to see their films since he was a kid, back in the 60's, one of the iconic figures that has been the world's film industry has retired. Each will have preference for one or another role, but ultimately (if he keeps his word, of course) one of the good guys retires, said in the broadest sense of the word because he was a good husband, good father, good millionaire, good convict, he was a great baseball player, good player, good millionaire, good thief; but above all, Charles Robert Redford is a good actor. In "A thief with style" interprets the real story of Forrest Tucker, a guy who escaped 18 times from different prisons over many years, which entered convicted of theft. David Lowery, in his fourth performance, returns with a passionate theme: escape. So he did in his first two films and somehow in the third, although "A Ghost Story" (2017) spoke of the reasons for the return. Despite the low quality of his previous work here he manages to redeem himself by virtue of a better quality of patience to develop the plot and the central character; but above all thanks to a solid script, co-written with David Grann, who manages to get out of the nonsense raised in recent years when it comes to films about the elderly playing at being naughty babies. The last sample of this was released a couple of weeks ago, remember? Yes, "King of Thieves" (James Marsh, 2018) also joins the set of dubious products like "My grandfather is a danger" (Dan Mazer, 2016), "Last trip to Las Vegas" (John Turteltaub, 2013) or "A blow with style" (Zach Braff, 2017), all of them saved to a greater or lesser extent by the office of huge cast. The old man and the revolver would be a possible translation of the original title, it sounds more like a western, and in some way it is, as will also be unavoidable the enormous amount of conceptual coincidences with "La mule", the last opus of Clint Eastwood released two months. Forrest leaves prison. He is old and he knows it. He is aware that times have changed and years have taken their toll on his body. Despite the promises he makes to Jewel (Sissy Spacek) will return to the old ways with its particular form. Forrest relates kindly to his victims without a single sign of violence, but with the firmness of the latent danger as a standard. He and his band composed of Teddy (Danny Glover) and Waller (Tom Waits) would hold the surprising number of sixty stolen banks in a month, with no victims or facts to regret, more than the theft per se. In some way the viewer understands that there are more powerful reasons that lead the protagonist to do what he does and, as often happens in these cases, it is inevitable not to feel affinity with the criminal. Of course there will be an antagonist in the figure of John Hunt (Cassey Affleck), the agent in charge of elucidating the framework and grabbing the thief. Far from those scripts we referred to in which the situation was built more than the characters, "A thief with style" is an invitation to two walks at the same time: The real character and the actor. Both come together in several common characteristics such as age, trajectory, etc; but perhaps the inevitability of passion for what one loves to do is what defines and drives them. One for the theft and its modus operandi, the other for acting in front of a camera. In turn, moviegoers will have the emotional experience of interpreting the huge amount of winks and references to the career of the actor as if it were a kind of living museum.
